Surf Guide Algarve taking on the winter elements, Surfing and Kitesurfing
Winter is for relaxing. Summer is for working. At least that is how most of the Algarve businesses are used to operate. Surf Guide Algarve is a little different. We love this time of year. The forecast is often super tricky but if you are a little flexible you can really score. Lucky for us we still have a few guests to share our passion with. Mostly guests that surfed many times with us before and are not scared for some winter elements. With some really powerful swell and a lot of wind we score some incredible waves. When the wind gets too much we pump up a kite and go kitesurfing. Enjoy the pictures!
Good waves are never guaranteed
Good vibes are. And those are just as important for a good surf session. The forecast can look pretty good but mother ocean always has the last say. Sometimes you are lucky, and sometimes your not. Knowing we are at the best spot at the best time we will almost always make it a fun surf anyway. Without the lows, no highs right? More often than not the days the forecast does not look great we get super fun waves. Or would that be a little expectation management going on here?
Lets go fly a kite
Damian Marley sings about it beautifully. The wind creating total havoc for the waves. Lets go kitesurfing!
Dedication always pays off
With the reputation of hard to forecast and fragile waves the Algarve is not the go-to winter destination for many surfers. Up north towards Ericeira and Peniche the waves break over reefs and points and are a lot easier to forecast. *and probably more often really good too. The downside of this is that it is busy everyday the forecast shows a few stars. Super grommets flying around your ears. Beaches closed for competition. Pros and heavy hitter locals dominating the line-up. Up there they have their own challenges. We just challenge ourselves with the waves on hand. Dedication always pays off in the end. After a few tricky surfs we always score. And when you score in the Algarve in winter, it can still be with no one out.
