Playing hide and seek with Surf Guide Algarve at the end of the world
Straightaway when we switched on the lights of the Christmas tree, the temperature dropped. Winter finally arrived. Armed with some limited edition Surf Guide Algarve hats and thicker wetsuits we are ready for almost anything. Where most of the crowds wait for the sun to do its magic, we go play hide and seek with no one around. The end of the world, in a little corner we score an absolute novelty wave. Far from perfect but with moments that will look good in any surf movie. Enjoy the full story.
Difficult choices
Do you know, you can even have fomo when you are in the water? Fear of missing out while surfing the one end of the beach while on the other end a wave is breaking you might actually also want to catch. Today we surf Tonel and start of at the right side of the spot. Mellow waves both left and right. As the sun is just rising and there is no one out, this A-frame wave is by far the best option. By the time the other crew find out the tide changes, making it a little bit all over the place and inconsistent. Luckily by now the other side of the beach almost catches fire.
Time to get serious
Suddenly its time to get serious. To sum up, it goes from mellow easy take offs to the most hollow drop the Algarve owns. Occasionally this corner gets really good. Normally ruled by boogie boarders and pro surfers. Beside the fact its 7 degrees it definetly is not perfect. But who needs perfect anyway. Our VIP guest / surf buddy – struggling to give this guy enough credits here- Grabs the camera with the promise I get a backside barrel. Mission complete. If you want to share mellow or hollow waves with us, drop us a line!
